  1. Cream sugar and lard. Add milk and vanilla. Add cloves, cinnamon and salt. Mix together the cream of tartar, baking soda and flour. Beat this into the batter, a little at a time.
  2. Pour into a greased tin, bake in a moderate oven until done. This is good with a little cream poured over each serving.
