Red Velvet Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening


  1. Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa, salt, water and food coloring with 2/3 cup buttermilk. Beat until well blended.
  2. Add eggs, remainder of buttermilk and vanilla. Beat 1 minute. Mix together vinegar and soda and fold into batter by hand. Do not beaTbsp Pour into greased pans and bake in a 350° F oven for 30 minutes.
  3. After cake has cooled prepare the frosting. In a medium saucepan on medium heat, mix Crisco, milk and flour until thick. Cool in refrigerator until cold. Mix in sugar and vanilla until creamy.
